The Clean Communities Act, originally adopted in 1986, created a statewide litter abatement program funded by a tax levied on manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers of litter-generating products.
A portion of the funds generated are distributed in the form of grants to 559 municipalities and all 21 counties in New Jersey. Disbursement of the grants is overseen by the New Jersey Clean Communities Council in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
Vernon Township uses its grant for litter cleanup on township streets, waterways, parks and recreation sites. Participation in this program not only helps keep Vernon clean and green but also, promotes long term sustainability of our natural resources.
Your non-profit organization, volunteer or civic group can earn funds by participating in a roadside cleanup. In addition to earning funds, taking part in a roadside cleanup is a great way for groups to foster a sense of community, responsibility and pride for our town.
